The head coach of the Longhorns’ football team said Thursday that players were “not in a place to speculate” about the future of the team following the season.
“I don’t think we’ve really had that much time to talk about that,” Austin head coach Charlie Strong said on a conference call with reporters.
“But, you know, we’re not in a position to speculate.
We’ve got a lot of games that we’ve got to win and a lot to accomplish, and there’s a lot we need to do to move forward.”
Texas (6-2, 3-2 Southeastern Conference) played its final two games of the regular season against Arkansas (8-3, 4-2), and ended up losing to South Carolina in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 8.
Strong said the team had not been fully briefed on the SEC’s postseason structure, but he was hopeful the new rules would make for an easier path for the program.
“The new rules are great,” Strong said.
“I’m optimistic that it’ll be better for everybody involved, for the players, and for us.”
The changes come after the school and Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby expressed concern over a lack of clarity surrounding the new postseason structure.
The conference had proposed that the conference’s top 16 teams play for the championship and that teams would play each other in the first round of the playoffs.
The Big 12 and Big Ten also have a similar postseason structure in place, but that model has not been used in the SEC since 2011.
The league has not finalized its postseason structure with its current four teams, and the league is considering new rules for the upcoming season.
