WASHINGTON — The Washington Spirit’s sandal wear has been on sale since November, and a coach with the WNBA team says he is not going to sell his old sandals.
Coach Stephanie Neely, who coaches the Spirit, said Monday the team was sold out of the shoes.
“It’s not for sale at this time, but we’ve done some sales and we’ll do some more,” Neely said.
Neely is the first coach to wear the shoes since the Spirit’s move to the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in 2016.
In 2016, the Spirit sold out its first season of women’s soccer at a minimum capacity of 20,000, the highest attendance in women’s professional soccer in U.S. history.
The Spirit is now sold out for its next two seasons, which will include the 2019 season.NCL season tickets for the NWSL’s first season in 2020 are still available.
In the past few weeks, fans have begun asking Neely to sell the Spirit sandals at her club’s games.
The club has not responded to multiple requests for comment on the sale.
Last month, the NWL announced a new partnership with a team in South Korea.
The NWSL has since expanded to more than 50 teams, with the Spirit and Washington Spirit both in the mix.
The Spirit was among three NWSL teams to have a player named the U.K. Player of the Year in 2017.
The other two teams are the Portland Thorns and the Seattle Reign.
