Boca Rhapsody, Fla.
— The Florida Gators have hired former Florida State assistant coach Matt Johnson as its next head coach.
The decision comes after Johnson, a former quarterback for the Seminoles from 2011-12, was promoted to assistant coach in May, when the team reached the Final Four for the first time since 2006.
Johnson spent the past four seasons with Florida, which finished the 2013-14 season ranked No. 3 in the country.
He coached quarterbacks Josh Rosen and Jameis Winston and receivers Dontae Johnson and Devin Funchess.
Johnson served as Florida’s offensive coordinator from 2012-13.
